More dress rehearsal promotional pictures for The Booth Centre Theatre Company, who performed “A Spanish Adventure” at The Edge Theatre in Chorlton, Manchester last week.

As ever an inspirational couple of hours working with this amazing theatre company. The Booth Centre, in Manchester supports people affected by homelessness. Their work is legendary. They’ve been supporting people for decades. Once based under Manchester Cathedral they moved a few years ago, not too far away to the bottom of Cheetham Hill Rd.

Some words about the play-

It’s 1936 and the enemy is at the gate…no literally it’s just at the gate…it’s at the front door…it’s making its way into our building…it’s here. What happens to a little family run arts centre when the far right come a calling. Follow the fortunes and misfortunes of the Diega family, as Franco’s followers try to take on a bunch of tap dancing poets, just days before the start of the Spanish Civil War.

In 2014 The Booth Centre were awarded three year funding from Arts Council England to work with The Edge Theatre & Arts Centre to launch The Booth Centre Theatre Company. As this funding comes to an end, we celebrate the achievements made over the past three years with a very special performance written and directed by Janine Waters with music by Simon Waters

Over the last three years, the funding has allowed us to offer regular drama and singing sessions, engaging rough sleepers and those at risk of being homeless in making high quality theatre and in all aspects of running a theatre company.

“The drama work has had a transforming effect on the people who took part. We watched them grow in confidence, learn to work together as a group, to trust each other and to listen to each other. They learnt new skills and their communication skills greatly increased. When they performed in public their self esteem increased fantastically. Many members of the group have moved on to employment, to take up education and training courses or have entered detox, as a direct result of the boost they got from the drama workshops.”

Amanda Croome, MBE, CEO of The Booth Centre
